I’m not going to jump around and pick furniture because last time I did that life bit me in the ass hard, but it looks like I might be moving to an apartment downtown-ish with my buddy. It adds a bit of a “commute” but it saves from rez life (seriously, we’ll save like $200 a month, food included) and, well, we get along so it also means avoiding dealing with idiots who put their bass to the max at 2am.. hopefully. And it moves me closer to the girlfriend’s place, which is always a plus. Anyways, here’s to hoping!

Could you explain exactly why “socialism” (as it pertains to the healthcare reform discussion) is dumb and doesn’t work? It’s not enough to just say it’s socialist now. The cold war ended—and insinuating that your opponents have sympathies with the International Communist Menace doesn’t have the tractrion it used to.

So what’s wrong with a public option? Do you really think it would be less efficient than the HMOs? Why doesn’t socialism work? Don’t we have a ton of examples of countries offering universal care that’s quite comparable to our own? Do we examples of countries with successful systems that are less socialist than our own?

I don’t say “socialist” to be a McCartyist. I say “socialism” because it’s the accurate term. Some people cringe at it but it’s a political science term and I’m using it. I use it more to tie the policies to those of European Socialism than Marxism. American usage of the term “liberal” is wholly inaccurate.

A public option will lead to: more government intrusion into our lives, higher taxes, a lesser level of care, lower efficiency and less innovation—this is true for 99% of government programs and subsidies and I’m a man of the odds. There are no examples for a developed country that is less socialist (I say less socialist because we are also subject to socialism. It’s not a dark thing.) than ours. The American economic experience is wholly different than those of other continents for a shitload of sociological reasons that are better for a book than a blog.

A lot of people at yesterdays regrettable townhall meeting were yelling that this or that detail of the proposed healthcare plan was “unconstitutional.” They had read their pocket constitutions and decided that this made them an expert on constitutional law. Apparently the U.S. Constitution prohibits everything they don’t like—and only the things they don’t like.

The proposed bill does not do anything about malpractice suits. Malpractice suits are tort law and tort law is (generally) state law. To limit or cap awards in malpractice suits would thrust federal law into an area that had traditionally belonged to the state. It might even run into some actual constitutional problems. If the healthcare bill is constitutionally problematic (and, for the most part, it isn’t), some sort of federal tort reform is constutituionally unthinkable.

I enjoyed whispering conspiratorily to the booing people who didn’t know I wasn’t on their side, “Wait—wouldn’t that sort of thing be unconstitutional?” They didn’t know—but either way, it didn’t bother them.

I don’t know how familiar you are with the Patriot movement but ‘unconstitutional’ is a pretty popular rallying cry among those folks. (If you’re in Dingell’s district you might occasionally rub elbows with members of the Michigan Militia, or the radically anti-tax people in Michigan who firmly believe that any form of taxation ever to exist is unconstitutional.)

I find it extremely, extremely alarming in general when people call shit like this ‘unconstitutional’ and I’m not familiar with their politics, because my next thought is ‘shit, am I about to hear some patriot movement crap?’

Regardless, get used to it because you’re going to hear it an awful lot.

The call of “unconstitutional” was pretty much the thing that disillusioned me when I was flirting with libertarianism. It is quite clear that health care coverage is something that crosses state lines. My employer is in MD, my doctor is in DC, I might fall down the stairs this weekend in NJ. It’s interstate commerce and the legislature can make laws to regulate it.

I think the prime counterarguement to socialism should be “It is dumb and doesn’t work” rather than “It is illegal.” Intrusive doesn’t always mean unconstitutional.

I could not agree more.

Why is it nobody realizes that, hey, the USSR tried socialism and… what happened again? Oh, right, it failed miserably and only oil money and a (former) KGB man saved the remains from catastrophe.

I was at the girlfriend’s place earlier and, as we had just finished a movie, her housemate squealed that there was a bat in the house. I suggested using a crucifix and some holy water, or maybe garlic, but for some reason they wouldn’t go for it. Maybe my girlfriend’s housemate is a demon? Anyways, never having dealt with bats before, undead or otherwise, I was a bit stumped, but I eventually just gently picked the bat up in a towel and let it free on the balcony. I got a big hero’s kiss, yay me! Anyways, bats are loving, gentle creatures, but they have really annoying voices. Maybe that’s why they are cursed to drink blood…
